Caroline Kennedy: The Quiet Super Hero

Updated on April 1, 2011

Mother, Wife and Activist: "The Scion of Public Service"

Caroline Kennedy (Schlossberg) has been called the Scion of Public Service by The AARP Magazine

Kennedy (she uses that name) has raised millions of dollars for New York Public Schools, and works to make sure that it is put into special programs that will put the money to best use. To do this, she has spent countless hours in the schools, doing hands on research and planning. This has increased since the 9/11 attack on New York.

While she has guarded her time and privacy, in order to mother three children and have the time for the schools and her professional activities, she has foregone her desire for privacy when she felt it necessary, such as to back Senator Barak Obama.

She personally handles her father's Library and Profile in Courage Award, works on a bipartisan committee for the presidential debates, actively supports the NAACP's Legal Defense and Education Fund and is the honorary chair of the New York Ballet.

She is also a professional writer who has written several books, one on the right to privacy, one an addition to her father's Profile in Courage and two about the family.

I like that I was unable to find pictures of her children on Google. I know that this is because she works to protect the privacy of her children and her mother tried to protect her and her brother.

She is a quiet hero, eschewing the spotlight, until she feels she must in order to meet a goal for a project.

She is the Quiet Super Hero.

A Public Life, She Grows Up and Serves Privately

I was 12 the first time I heard of her, and she was three. I, like my parents, was a Nixon 'woman', but the Kennedy family fascinated me. That cute little girl was a small part of it.

I was in the girls' room in my high school when I heard that her father was shot and although I hadn't thought much about her, other than she named her pony Macaroni, it was her I thought of at that moment.

However, she went through most of her life with an amazing anonymity, considering where she came from. As her dazzling brother made the cover of People Magazine as the sexiest ever, the cover of The New York Post for flunking the bar exam, several times, Caroline quietly graduated Harvard and Columbia Law School with little publicity.

Yes, when she married and had children, Jack and Jackie's grandkids, there were stories. She was public at the opening of her father's library, her mother's funeral, and then at her little brother's. But she always managed to go back to her private life, until she did an interview about a book she wrote or to promote a cause.

She did come out this year to support Barack Obama during the primaries, but with a quiet dignity.

However, during all this time she was not idle at all, but became what The AARP Magazine called the Scion of Public Service.

P.S. I made this lens for the Squidoo Superheroes Project

I was invited to participate in the Squidoo Superhero Project, making 5 lenses in 2 weeks about the people who have inspired me, mentored me, changed the way I look at the world. The people I just want to say a big loud public THANKS to.

If you buy anything from this page, you'll automatically (for free, of course) be sending a royalty straight to the Squidoo Charity Fund, which pays out to nonprofits like JDRF and Room to Read and Donors Choose every month.

Caroline Kennedy Expresses Interest in Senate Seat: News As of 12/5/08

Apparently, she is becoming more interested. Her family is thrilled.

I heard a TV pundit ask what her career is, apparently this man is more into talking than research. He went on to suggest that she would be another Sarah Palin, out of her league.

However, we know that she has demonstrated herself to be a very capable administrator and an intelligent, hard worker. She has been quiet and private, but since her children have grown, is becoming more active and public.

Sarah Palin lacks an intellectual curiosity and this will interfere with her effectiveness until she changes. Caroline Kennedy has always shown a hard work ethic with an ability to learn and grow.

I don't know if she wants to be Senator, but she would be great. In fact, I am seeing a Clinton/Kennedy ticket in 2016. Wouldn't that be something?

I'm looking for suggestions for more good articles, photos, videos, blog posts, etc about this person. Think of this like the "External Resources" part of a Wikipedia page. What references would you add about my superhero?
