Obama's Daughters

Can you image what it would be like to stand next to your parents and watch them mark ballots that select your father for the Presidency of the United States?

I first remember when Caroline and John-John were in the White House. I was 12. I was for Nixon and very upset that their Dad won the election. However, I also had a Dad who I looked up to as if he were the most powerful man in the world, thus I felt an affinity and fascination with them. Today Dad is 91 and living with me, but still magnificent. I think this is part of what makes these girls interest me. They are also older, and as we have already seen, with strong personalities of their own.

It seems that while Malia, 10, Sasha, 7, are young girls they are uniquely qualified to be the country's 'First Daughters'. They have opinions of their own, express themselves well and have excellent judgment. But they are still, just little girls, really.

"This isn't a Hilton hotel, is it?" he said his 10-year-old daughter, Malia, will ask as the family tours the country - because the little one keeps up with the news and does not approve of Paris Hilton, he says.

Well, it seems that these little girls are savvy and know what they want and don't want. Sasha has complained about adds that insinuate a girl friend for her Dad, and in no uncertain terms, "He already has a wife"! Malia doesn't approve of the Paris Hilton life and expresses this in her preferences.

I for one will enjoy watching them grow up. I will probably want to know more than I have a right to. I will also settle for what information their parents decide is appropriate for us to know.

We learn that there will be girly sleep overs in the White House, that the parents don't like whining or fighting and that he isn't an ice cream fan. Out of the mouths' of babes!

And what must it be like having your parents' lives, and yours, considered to be public property. People make videos and write songs with lines like this: " "I Got A Crush On Obama" stars an aspiring model and actress named Amber Lee Ettinger, aka Obama Girl. Her song, which has lines like "Universal health care reform, it makes me warm," has gotten more than 3 million hits and nearly 10,000 comments since being posted two months ago on YouTube, the online video-sharing site."

Well, the littler one spoke up, "Sasha asked Mommy about it," Obama said Monday in an interview with The Associated Press. "She said, 'Daddy already has a wife' or something like that."

Remember These Are Little Girls

Years ago Rush Limbaugh thought he could make a crack about the then 13 year old Chelsea Clinton, calling her the new White House Dog. Even his ditto heads got on him about that one. However, we all know that these girls will be up for public scrutiny. People will poke at little things, and sometimes just give them too much praise and attention making it a challenge for their parents to keep them grounded.

What are the limits here?

When I was little and my parents ran their newspapers, Arrowsmith Printing I was a little bit of the center of attention in a tiny town in Iowa. I know what it is like to have your parents admired and criticised for things I didn't understand, yet absorbed. It isn't east, but it is also exciting.

They have two new beenie babies, dark skinned human girls one named Sasha, the little one, I believe, and the other one Malia. When Mis Obama spoke out about this in no uncertain terms, the company insists that those were just two pretty names.

Now, I am not going to ask who believes them, because that would be insulting. What I am going to ask it this....

Malia is Radiance and Sasha is Rosebud.

Dad and Mom are Renegade and Renaissance, respectively.

I have always wondered if making these names public wasn't a problem, but the Secret Service isn't an agency I am going to second guess.

Whoever thought of the names, I think they are perfect!

Amy Carter was in the White House for 4 years, from 5 5 to 9. She was much younger than her older brothers, an only child in some ways. She was fairly well protected, but the country enjoyed her.

She grew up to be a political activist involved in protests and criticism of American foreign policy.

In 1995 she illustrated a children's book, The Little Baby Snoogle-Fleejer which was written by her father, President Jimmy Carter.

She is currently married with a son, Hugo and lives quietly with little political involvement.

Shortly after Bill Clinton was elected Hillary met with Jackie Kennedy for advice about raising good kids in the White House.

However, Rush Limbaugh was soon calling her the White House dog. Even his ditto heads gave him a hard time about that. What must that have been like for a 13 year old girl?

She has grown into a successful young woman. She has graduated from Stanford and has had some great jobs. There have been no scandals or legal problems, she supported her mother in her bid for the presidency.

This picture was captioned "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?" These kinds sentiments were not just written by bloggers, but by such 'notable' people as Rush Limbaugh.

John-John was still in the womb when his daddy was elected, his sister, Caroline was just three. Their stay there was cut short by a national tragedy, but will the nation ever forget seeing two toddlers playing in the oval office?

There are people who clearly think that anything goes. Rush Limbaugh made fun of 13 year old Chelsea Clinton and someone thought it was ok to have porn of the Obama girls on the internet. Both of those are way over the top, but what are the limits? is it ok to publicize the legal problems the Bush twins had (that was brief and they are doing well now) because they were older or not?

Where are the limits? I want to hear that from you.
